SINGLE DRUM COMPACTORS: MAIN FEATURES AND CHARACTERISTICS
A single drum compactor is a kind of road-building construction equipment designed to compact the layer of various types of soil, break-stone, gravel, and other similar materials.
Just like in the case with other varieties of such machines, the main working body of the single drum compactors are rollers - heavy cylinders mounted instead of one or both wheel axles, intended to level and compact the layer of substance by their own weight during movement over this substance. However, unlike, for example, the asphalt compactor, the surface of the roller of the single drum compactor is not smooth. Rollers with protrusions are used for working with the loose soil, and if the soil structure is heterogeneous, latticed surface is used, which allows sufficiently homogenizing the soil and, as a consequence, increasing the effectiveness of the tamping.
Single drum compactors are capable of ideally tamping gravel and fine-grained stone chippings, various types of soil and clay, sand and break-stone. The resulting compacted surface can serve both as an independent coating and as the base layer for laying other types of pavement (e.g. concrete or asphalt). Thus, single drum compactors are indispensable mechanisms in the sectors of construction and road-building, and apart from road laying, they are widely used in laying foundations, construction of dams, ditches and trenches for pipelines.
