The road roller is class of road-building construction equipment designed for leveling and compacting the road surface of different types.

From the constructional point of view, a road roller is a self-propelled machine, one or both wheel axles of which are replaced with heavy cylinders (rollers). In fact, it is the large weight of the rollers that make it possible to fulfill the main task of this type of vehicles: when moving on freshly laid layer of road pavement, the roller makes the surface smoother and compacts the material (the compaction depth for super-heavy road rollers weighing up to 16 tons can exceed half a meter). As a consequence - the reliably compacted construction material (for example, asphalt-concrete mixture) becomes much more durable and resistant to penetration of moisture, which is a fundamentally important characteristic having a direct impact on the durability of the pavement .

Some models of road rollers are equipped with a system which delivers the momentum of the vertical vibration to the rollers (such machines are called vibratory road rollers), which can significantly increase the effectiveness of compaction in comparison to static rollers, and thus reduce the number of runs needed to complete the work.
