Gantry cranes

A gantry crane is a type of cargo-hoisting construction equipment, an overhead-type crane, which moves along rail-track.

The gantry crane is a U-shaped metal structure: single- or double-girder overhead span (bridge) is usually fixed to double-column supports. The columns of the supports, in their turn, are provided with wheeled carts intended for movement along the rail-track (moreover, depending on the weight capacity of the crane, each rail-track may consist of one or several rails). On the overhead bridge span, there is a mobile cargo cart equipped with load lifting equipment. The design of some models (such as those used for the construction of ships) provides for usage of two cargo carts.

It should be also noted that there are a variety of gantry cranes, which are significantly different both in size and in load capacity. For instance, the length of the bridge can be from 4 m to 170 m, and the maximum weight of the cargo varies in the widest range of 3 tonnes to 1600 tonnes.

Gantry cranes are used to solve an extremely wide range of tasks directly related to the need to move large masses of cargo on relatively small distances. In particular they include: handling and storage operations (outdoors and indoors), construction works, ship- and wagon-building and repairs, construction and maintenance of hydroelectric power stations, etc.
