BUCKET TRUCKS: MAIN FEATURES AND SELECTION CRITERIA
Aerial platform (autohydraulic hoist) is a hydraulic hoisting appliance mounted on a vehicle or on special chassis. The lifting boom is equipped with a basket (working platform) for transporting the workers with the equipment to the necessary height, which, depending on the model, may be operated either from the vehicle's cab or from the working platform. The weight capacity of the autohydraulic hoist varies between 200 and 400 kg, and the maximum height is between 12 and 55 meters (some models are also capable of lowering the basket below the surface level). Moreover, the angle of swinging boom rotation is, most often, 360°, and the maximum lateral outreach is 8 to 20 m.
The main domains where aerial platforms are applied include assembling, exploitation, and reparation of electricity transmission lines and communications lines, outdoor advertising, bridges and other constructions, plantation maintenance, fire fighting, and rescue operations.
Depending on the boom construction, the autohydraulic hoists fall into one of the three types: angled (elbow-type), extension type and combined ones.
In the elbow-type hydraulic hoists, the boom consists of two-three knee sections connected with feathering hinges, which are operated by the action of hydrocylinders.
The telescopic sections of extension-type boom are situated one inside another. Extension may be achieved either due to rope-and-chain-driven transmission or long hydrocylinders.
Construction of the combined autohydraulic hoist, which is evident from its name, consists of several knee sections and a telescoping boom.
Regardless of the type, most aerial platforms are equipped with outriggers providing for necessary stability in the course of work.
