Тестирование с помощью BGD 548 основано на стандартной процедуре косого среза: покрытие разрезается под определенным углом таким образом, чтобы разрез проникал в основу. Толщина слоя рассчитывается на основе проекции наклона (b) поверхности реза, определенной с помощью измерительного микроскопа, и угла разреза (а). Аналогичным образом может быть определена толщина отдельного слоя многослойных систем. BGD 548 состоит из окрашенного в черный цвет алюминиевого блока, на котором размещены следующие функциональные элементы:Сменный твердосплавный наконечник с точно заточенным угловым режущим лезвием (в комплекте 4 фрезы)Резак № 1: Диапазон измерения: 20–2800 мкм (коэффициент: 20 мкм), угол наклона резца 45°;Резак № 2: Диапазон измерения: 10–1400 мкм (коэффициент: 10 мкм), угол наклона резца 63,4°Резак № 3: Диапазон измерения: 5-700мкм (коэффициент: 5 мкм), угол наклона резца 76°;Резак № 4: Диапазон измерения: 2-2,80мкм (коэффициент: 2 мкм), угол наклона резца 84,3°.Измерительный микроскоп с увеличением 30 и сеткой (2,8 мм с делением 1/140), который также подходит для задач проверки состояния.
